Demolition Derby

A few weeks ago, we got a flyer in the mail going over all the events that were going to be happening in Wasatch county over the next few weeks. Like Miss Wasatch, rodeos, tennis tournaments you could enter, and the fair. I thought it'd be fun to do the tennis tournament, but Josh is too busy and well, I'm 32 weeks pregnant and while playing tennis I forget I have a watermelon in the place of my usual flabby stomach six pack, so I tend to make myself super sore and I literally can't move for the rest of the day...

Anyway, one event caught my eye- Demolition Derby. I was excited but then I looked at the note right next to it which said SOLD OUT. Really? I guess demolition derbies are a pretty big deal here in Wasatch county (I shouldn't be surprised, I mean, I've seen the rednecks at Holiday Lanes in Heber while bowling.) and the day the tickets go on sell they sell completely out! Josh and I were bummed and promised we'd find out when they went on sell for next year and buy some the very second they went on sell.

On Thursday when Josh and I got home from painting our landlord's kitchen I got on facebook and one of my friends from our ward had 2 extra tickets for the demolition derby! I quickly said we'd take them and Josh and I were really excited for Saturday night.

We showed up at 5:45 because the derby was supposed to start at 6... well on some tickets it said 7 so the men in charge said they'd split the difference for those who got the wrong time and start at 6:30 but it actually started closer to 7.  Let me just say, sitting on a metal bleacher surrounded by mullets, big gulps, and plaid was uncomfortable but actually pretty entertaining anyway so the time flew by.

There were a few heats to get into the final along with a powder puff round, a truck round and a Herby derby round of little cars. There was supposed to be a Grudge Match round where those who didn't make it into the final could smash up each others cars until they didn't run anymore, but the heats were so crazy that the cars that weren't in the final were so beat up they couldn't even run to do the grudge match. Apparently, this absolutely NEVER happens, according to the lady sitting behind us who is a die hard derby lady. "I ain't never seen this afore! Too crunched up? Nah! I can't believe it!"

Josh and I were sitting on the edge of our seats the entire time the heats were going. It was awesome! Within the first 10 seconds of the first match a car flipped over and the guy had to be rescued from the car and taken by ambulance to the hospital. He was ok, but that set the tone for the rest of the night, these guys were out for blood!
Car that flipped in the first 10 seconds of the first heat

There's the driver of this car in the plaid, checking out the damage after the heat

Crunch! The blue car is one of Josh's employees

This is the powder puff round. The purple and white car on the far right didn't have breaks so she couldn't stop. I think that helped her out because she ended up winning the round! She was realllly good

Josh and I thought this was hilarious. The tow truck on the left came out to get cars out after a heat but ended up breaking down and another tow truck from a different company had to come tow them out.. now we know who to call if we break down and need a tow ;)

The truck round! Definitely the most crazy! Those trucks can really take a beating! A few started on fire and had to be extinguished, then the drivers STILL got back in the action.

A truck is on fire, the orange man is running to put it out

This guy's truck flew and landed on the side. The driver was totally fine, you can see him crawling out of the back window.

The final round! There was 10 cars in it and it was absolutely crazy! Fire, smoke, cars flipping... One car flipped 360 degrees and landed on its wheels again. The driver was checked out and he was fine and kept going like nothing happened. Tires were flying off and then cars would get stuck on them. There were like 6 tires just sitting in the arena at the end and two of them belonged to the winner of the derby

The winner! The green car. He was definitely our favorite and we thought he'd win from the beginning. He could drive better and his car just looked the least crunched up. But like 20 seconds into the heat his front right tire came off. We were disappointed because usually the other cars that lost tires just sat there and were eventually out. Not this guy! He kept ramming into other guys and eventually his OTHER front tire fell off. There were only a few cars left and we thought for sure he was done. Nope! He kept going, much slower at first and ended up being one of the last 2 cars. The red one in the picture was totally fine and was going after the green one, but kept missing because this guy could drive so well. Eventually the red car just stopped and couldn't move anymore. The green one ran into him from every side and was the winner! It was so fun to watch! And everyone was happy he won because it was just so crazy that he lost both front tires and could still move around better then guys with all 4 tires.

Josh and I had so much fun and we can't wait to go again! Only this time we're going to buy tickets on opening day so we don't miss out!
